CBS “Hawaii Five-0″ Contracts Aerial Filmworks for New Cineflex HD Aerial Sequences
January 30, 2011

The CBS hit show “Hawaii Five-0” contracted Aerial Filmworks to provide the Cineflex V14HD and camera operators for the latest aerial scenes. The crew filmed on the Big Island, Maui and Oahu. “The Cineflex allowed us to quickly film a number of sequences at a wide variety of locations,” states Mark Gerasimenko, one of Hawaii Five-O’s camera operators. “We shot on 3 different islands over two days, and the Cineflex footage immediately was edited into next week’s show. And most important, the Cineflex is easy to ship and fast to install which really helps our budgets.”
Gray Mitchell, Aerial Filmwork’s camera operator, along with Gerasimenko, teamed up with pilot Josh Lang of Paradise Helicopters. Using the powerful Bell 407 allowed the crew the flexibility and speed to carry a full fuel load and move between scenes that included lave flows from the Kilauea volcano, waterfalls, car chases, and air-to-air sequences. “I love working with the Cineflex V14. The system is lightweight and we never miss a shot,” observes Lang. “I look forward to working with Gray, Mark, and the Cineflex V14 again.”

One of the most memorable moments for Gerasimenko was filming a motorcycle scene with Chin Ho, one of the characters played by actor Daniel Dae Kim. With the robust image stabilization of the system and versatility of the Fujinon 42x 9.7mm lens, the aerial team pulled off a shot that started with an incredibly tight close-up of the real actor while he was riding the motorcycle and widen out to see a huge Hawaiian vista.
CBS Hawaii Five-0 airs on Monday nights at 10pm EST.

Aerial Filmworks was selected by Director/Producer Thomas Radler of ThoraFilm to produce aerials for a new 5 part epic series on the islands of Hawaii. The programs will show on ARTE, one of the leading public broadcast stations in Europe. Ron Chapple, Aerial Director of Photography, worked onsite with Phillip Flamig, the ARTE camerman, to discover unique angles for each of the programs.

ThoraFilm commissioned Paradise Helicopters to provide a Bell 407 helicopter. Film pilots Calvin Dorn and Josh Lang flew the aerial team from the Big Island to Kauai and back.

Aerial Filmworks flew 30 hours over the Big Island of Hawaii, and the islands of Maui, Oahu, Lanai, Molokini, Molokai, and Kauai during the course of the two filming sessions. Combining Ron Chapple’s 15 years experience of filming in Hawaii and the pilots intricate knowledge of numerous “secret spots” around the islands produced an amazing amount of beautiful scenes in high-definition video.
